In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov will share with you a powerful chess opening for Black, called the Owen’s Defense, where Black responds with 1..b6. It is also known as the Queen’s Fianchetto Defence or Greek Defence. This hyper-modern chess opening is greatly underestimated and relatively unknown.

Therefore, you can play this opening to surprise your opponents right from the start of your game, dragging them into unknown territory and forcing them out of their opening repertoire so that they have to think for themselves! Being full of tricks and active possibilities for Black, it is one of the best chess openings to keep up your sleeve, especially when playing against amateur players or in blitz games.

From this video, you will learn the key idea of attacking the White’s e4-pawn in the center with your b7-bishop. GM Igor Smirnov also teaches how to play actively when White tries to protect the pawn with their queen, or pushes their pawn, or pins your knight with Bg5 instead.

  1. Along the lines of the St George Which Miles used to get the better of Karpov. I could be wrong but thinking that the St George was an adaptation of Owen's defence.

  2. At 13:15 did you reverse forward and back? You say ‘the knight does not go forward it will go back’ but the lines you show has the knight moving forward

  3. White will not play such like as u say

  4. Dear Igor. why do recommend this opening (and the equivalent B3) when elsewhere you discuss all the weaknesses this opening creates?

  5. Great video: Superb instruction. I just discovered these videos this week, thankfully. I will give 1…b6 a thorough study and learn from my losses and draws. In combination with the video on the Larsen's opening 1.b3 (actually, I seem to confront 1.Nf3 with my main reply being 1…d5 2.b3 and, though quite similar, the theory is slightly different but I am certainly not a master player), I am motivated to avoid giving up 1.b3 due to such poor past results. Thanks for the video and I hope to discover why this particular opening has proven more difficult for me than more complicated openings (and I do understand the ideas of the openings I use most often).
I haven't looked at all the videos available here, yet. Hope to find one on the Reti opening. Keep up the good work.

  6. What do you do if when you move your Bishop to B4, and they move their pawn to A3? If you drop back to A4, then they can move the knights pawn to B3.

  7. But Nc3 is a move you don't want to make with white in this setup

  8. 1.b3-d5
    2.e3-c5
    3.Nf3-Bg4 or 3Nf3-Nf6 than g6
    Please reply

  9. We want 2nd part of this opening sir. Thanks a lot🤗🥰

  10. You got past 1,000 likes! Well done! Did you do a follow-up video, as promised?

  11. What if black plays A3 kicking the bishop back? Knight no longer pinned!!!

  12. i actually was in my chess academy, and played this exact opening and won! it is truly so powerful. now my favorite opening as black 🙂

  13. The proper way in this opening to defend the e4 pawn; Bd3. The C pawn must remain mobile in case white needs to play c3 or c4 in the future and developing a knight on c3 is going to get it pinned. White is also a move closer to castling Kingside with Bd3. I would give Nc3 a '?' here meaning it is a bad move.

  14. I know I’m late to the party but holy cow man this opening has got me out of a rut. same with b3 for white. So tricky to play against finally got me back to 1800 thanks you! Definitely my favorite opening

  15. Buddy create the second part of this video please

  16. My father (Yuogslav) opens as white with this at least 90% of the time. And half the time he'll double it. It's always kept me on my toes.

  17. What if their response to pinning the knight is to go pawn a3? I'm totally shit at chess, so my first instinct is to kick it tf out.

  18. All of my opponents play a3 after i pin the knight what do i do?😭

  19. Super. I just broke 1500 10min rapid thanks to this. I've been playing white ok at 1400 but I struggled playing black pieces, but this really clarified a lot for me in the defense I like best. Thank you so much fort his excellent teaching!

  20. been playing chess for 2 months and i am smashing 500's with this

  21. I might suggest to illustrate a master or amateur submitted game with opening analysis

  22. please make a video of queens indian defence!

  23. Yes please! More on 1…b6 please! And how about a video on the similar English Defence (d4, b6, c4, e6 then black plays Bb7). Thank you Igor.

  24. At 12:03 you point out that the bishop can't go away. But if Bd3, then Nxd4 doesn't work because of Ba6+! Thanks for this very instructive lesson.

  25. Amazing. Just found that my moves are an actual opening. I Play it with Black and White against anything lmao
So many lines you showed i had a million times.
Definitly will try First b2 with White instead of g2

  26. Actually my reaction to 1…b6 is 😂😂😂

  29. I miss the cat in the background of the videos

  30. B4-B5 works with white at least around 14-1500.

  31. What if the white knight after C3, his next move is H3 with the opposite knight?
Your videos are awesome, and love that accent😉

  32. не, главная загадка шахмат, почему 99 процентов онлайн игроков скоты, унылое гавно и читеры? запиши видосик плиз
