In this video I show how I make a wood and epoxy chess board. The woods I used are Maple wood and Walnut wood. The epoxy resin I used is Total Boat Thick Set. I used black diamond pigment for the color. The color is Purple Haze. This is a double sided chess board. The one side has Walnut squares and purple epoxy squares with the purple epoxy border. The other side has Walnut and Maple squares with the purple epoxy border. The process started the same way how to make a regular chess board, but the difference was the Maple wood strips. I made the Maple wood strips thinner, so the epoxy had a place to be. I made the form with extra roofing OSB that I had left over from when I built my house. I put tuck tape on the OSB because the epoxy will release the best from the tuck tape. I sealed the edges with silicone to prevent the epoxy from leaking out of the form. I also sealed the underneath chess board to try to prevent air bubbles. This epoxy pour was a little over one gallon of epoxy. I waited about 16 hour after the pour to take it out of the mold. It came out of the mold good with no issues. I used my 20 inch planer to flatten the epoxy and take it down to the Walnut wood squares. I then used the drum sander to start the process of making the chess board smooth. I used my router to put a chamfer on the edges. Sanding epoxy and wood takes more effort than sanding only wood. The epoxy is harder than the wood, so I had to be careful to do my best to sand it evenly. Epoxy also fills in the sand paper on my sander so I use the air compressor to blow out the epoxy dust. Before the final sand, I wet the chess board with water to raise the wood grain. This will keep the board as smooth as possible with the finish is applied. I used Furniture Butter for the finish. To see if anyone actually reads this, simple comment the word “purple” I am happy with the finished product of the epoxy and walnut chess board. If you have the right tools, this is a good diy project. I did not make the pieces, but if you are good at wood turning, matching pieces would look awesome. This is epoxy resin art. I enjoy making woodworking project like this. I think it would be neat to make this same style charcuterie board.

Purple, how big are your squares? Love the color design. Next time you make one, leave 1/4โ and fill it with a translucent purple to give the illusion the squares are floating.
nice, very nice.. where is your shop??
What is your favorite part of the process?
I love all your wood working videos. So relaxing. Iโve done a few projects just by watching your videos. You are awesome
Beautiful!! I know I tell you all the time, but youโre so talented ๐คฉ
Awesome job, epoxy use is becoming very popular in woodworking and you make it look so easy!
Gorgeous!! Nicely done!

The end result was nice but I don't understand how this is supposed to be a how to video. There's no instruction or explanation at any point. It's just a video of something being made, there is zero how to in it. As someone looking for real how to videos it gets annoying how lots of people label their videos incorrectly just so they can get as many views as possible with the least amount of effort put into them.
wicked awesome!
Do you sell these ?
What width is your planer?
Purple
sorry… but if you don't explain… I spend my money elsewhere
How much do you charge for the blue one in this video?……..it's a beautiful
I would love to make something like this. Would you be able to help me
What size are your squares 1 1/2 or 2 inch
Purple. Awesome job.
You do great work. Just made my firs wood/ epoxy chess board and ended up with one simple in my flood coat . Is there any way to fix this without sanding and pouring another coat. Thanks 1:44 1:46
Ficou lindo o tabuleiro!! Parabรฉns!!
Just wow
Please people, use mask when dealing with epoxy, it can cause healt issues๐
But other than that, amazing chess board well done
Great work ๐
purple – what's the best way to do this if I have a 13" planer, not a 20"? What are the total dimensions of the final board? Thanks – looks great!
I looooove the checker board but oooo many that had my hair on end you using a router on CARPET ๐ฎ๐
Purple! Very nice! Going to attempt one myself
Do you have the directions posted somewhere? I would love to try but i am very new and dont know where to start
Nice project, but on my device music is awful: it has this trait of being clipped/distorted like it were too loud. Idk if it is codec's fault, but other videos play loud and clear, this one is weird even when i lowered the volume.
I wanna know from you bro is that what is the life expectancy of epoxy you used in this video???
What do u do so the epoxy doesn't bleed into the wood?
Thank you for sharing. It gave me an idea of how to do mine. I am looking do a chess board for my hubby so I hope this works out as good as yours looks.
purple
Stunning ๐
Great video! Im wondering how did the bottom turn out? Or is it not color on the bottom?
How much epoxy did you use could you roughly estimate the price looking to do one myself!๐
