About this video:
This is a rating climb series (or speedrun) where I play games against players from different rating levels, starting at 600 and working all the way up to 2200. In this video I play players in the 800 to 1000 range. I try to focus on the thought process behind the moves I’m making. You will learn all sorts of chess strategies, chess tactics, chess ideas, and chess concepts. I talk about how to think during a chess game and what the thought process should be.

  1. What a great channel, one of the first I have actually subscribed to. Hope it will get the large following it deserves

  2. Thank you so very much! You rekindled an old man's interest in chess.

  3. I thought two recommendations you made for players at this level were to castle and devlop pieces early; you haven't done either.

  4. some dangerous 900 players out there, never take it for granted that they will be an easy win !

  5. At 12:04, opponent can capture pawn with Knight, and if Nelson catches back with pawn, opponent captures pawn with their queen and create a fork with the king and the bishop.

  6. I really like how you employ all the principles you talk about in your other videos, makes it more understandable when I see a true application of them

  7. ok so he played e4 and I'll go with e5, hmm so he resigned but he played this position very well.. kudos

  8. I noticed on both videos you were playing 5 min games and you made comments on both about running out of time. It would be more instructive for us if you played at least 10 min games. I'd prefer 15min games so time is not much of a factor. Please consider this. We want to learn. A bit slower pace would help. Please?

  9. Love hearing you think and showing possible moves while doing so.

  10. 800 and 1000 are almost same. after few hundreds of games at 800 you eventually become 1000.

  11. Best channel for explaining the moves and thought processes that I've found, some people are natural teachers, and you are one! Subscribed, and thanks!

  12. Glad to see your subscribers have finally increased. I have been here since you were on 7k subscribers.
    Amazing progress man! Keep Going!!

  13. I just hit 800 after several weeks of frustrating grind. Even though on a large scale it's not that impressive, I'm so proud of myself since I grinded from 400 lol Yeah, I was down bad. Thanks for the help, man

  14. Very useful video, so many new tactics to learn, keep it up

  15. Hearing a chess player think while he's playing is extremely helpful!

  16. I can't see why he kept resigning so early. Even if it was hopeless, would a low rated player know it?

  17. Any <1000 who see that rating and doesn't abort, especially as black is a cut above the usual <1000

  18. My 6yo son has taken a strong interest in chess over the past several months and I'm so glad I found this channel. It has been way more helpful than a lot of the channels with much higher subs. You are an incredible teacher to beginners explaining things that make sense not for just this one move, but principles that can be applied in any game. I'm loving these and your traps series. My son is improving quickly thanks to these videos.

  19. Great explanations, but that Indian guy resigning 3 times in the middle of the game was quite annoying and not very instructive. I would not have rematched him. It is what it is.

  20. Does your opponent see that you are a 2400? If I were this 800 I would immediately realise that I’m not going to win this game. So I will probably play less good or I will be scared that I make a mistake.

It would be better if they think you are an 800 as well.

  21. thia was very helpful.
idea…play the game then do the commentary after

  22. Even if you lose a pawn or a piece during the midgame, always always play to checkmate. Your opponent, who has the same Elo as you, blunders just as often as you do.

  23. What happened to develop castle attack and checkmate?

  24. Thank you! Someone to explain basic tactics without making me feel too stupid 🙂

  25. You're awesome… I love how you play as a human and not as a "master" who talks down to those wanting to learn and to those you play… This is the most practical video on chess I've ever seen… You explain everything so perfectly… Thank you…

  26. I like how you explain move you need to make more videos like this on openings and explain the moves

  27. Pawn e6 was interesting in the early part of the video. I was wondering about castle queenside so the rook protected the queen.

  28. I just wanted to appreciate the fact that you remain quiet in between moves, a lot of lessons ramble on talking non stop in between for more tips which personally makes it harder to focus on the moment. You do a great job of staying silent and letting us think about what's going on which really helps give a clear dynamic of the reason behind the moves

  29. Seema like if you have to change things up due to time, we're not really learning the principles that were meant to be taught. TY.

  30. I just love how you explain what you are looking for in tactics instead of why you moved somewhere.

  31. Hey. Love you’re videos and have been climbing the later since I started watching so thank you!

In this game around 24:07 you have some difficult choices and I wanted to ask about some moves I saw and if there could have been beneficial outcomes.

Why not bishop back to B1 followed by queen C2?
    Potential check mate

I suppose you could get choked up bye black pawn G6 but let me know what you think

  32. Im just saying what i found, it may be innacurate as i am only 740, when it was danish gambit you pushed your pawn to e5 saying he couldnt take, if he took with knight c and you didnt take it would be M1 if you didnt move your queen, if you took back he wins your bishop after taking with queen and giving check. While forking bishop.

  33. For you to be able to play and explain shows great skill, I couldn't do that.

  34. How does he manage to play 800 rated players as a 2300? or is he actually on a 800 new account while we can't see it?

  35. Holy crap Nelson the guy just kept resigning in no where near bad positions😊

  36. These video's are very helpful – well done!

  37. I think at the end 27:48 the opponent could play knight to g5 that protect the checkmate & save the knight
